Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Wavestore run on Linux instead of Windows?

Wavestore's VMS is built on a hardened Linux operating system for a critical reason: security. Linux has a significantly smaller attack surface than Windows, receives fewer targeted exploits, and doesn't require third-party antivirus software that can degrade recording performance. Wavestore manages the OS lifecycle directly, delivering regular security patches and kernel updates as part of the VMS maintenance cycle — so your surveillance servers aren't dependent on Windows update schedules or exposed to common ransomware vectors.

Is Wavestore VMS NDAA compliant?

Yes. Wavestore VMS and Vision cameras are NDAA compliant. It does not use components from prohibited manufacturers, making it approved for use in U.S. government and critical infrastructure projects. For organisations subject to NDAA procurement rules, Wavestore provides a compliant, open-platform alternative without sacrificing flexibility or performance.

How is Wavestore VMS licensed, and are there any hidden costs?

Wavestore uses a per-camera, perpetual licence model with no base licence fee and no charge for additional client workstations. You pay only for the number of camera channels and the edition tier you need. Licences can be upgraded instantly from Base to Premium, Enterprise, or Ultimate as your requirements grow — without reinstalling the software. Annual Software Maintenance Agreements (SMAs) are available for ongoing access to updates and technical support.

How many cameras can Wavestore support across a multi-site deployment?

Each Wavestore server supports up to 254 camera channels. For larger deployments, multiple servers can be federated into a single, centrally managed system with no upper limit on total camera count. This architecture is proven in deployments ranging from single-site retail stores to enterprise environments spanning hundreds of locations and thousands of cameras.

What is LASS, and why does it matter for video recording?

LASS (Large Allocation Storage System) is Wavestore's proprietary file system purpose-built for continuous video recording. Unlike NTFS or ext4, which fragment data over time and degrade retrieval speed, LASS pre-allocates large storage blocks that prevent fragmentation entirely. This means consistently fast video playback and export, even on systems that have been recording 24/7 for years — without the need for periodic disk defragmentation or rebuilds.

Can I view live and recorded video remotely?

Yes. Wavestore includes WaveView, a client application that allows operators to view live and recorded video from any authorised workstation on the network. For remote access beyond the local network, Wavestore supports secure connections over VPN. Mobile viewing is also available for on-the-go situational awareness, giving security managers visibility from any location.

Which video analytics platforms does Wavestore support?

Wavestore integrates with a broad ecosystem of analytics engines, including solutions for facial recognition, ANPR/LPR (number plate recognition), people counting, perimeter detection, object classification and much more. Analytics metadata is ingested directly into the VMS timeline, enabling operators to search and filter video by analytic event type. A full list of validated analytics partners is available on request.

What level of technical support does Wavestore provide?

Wavestore provides direct technical support from its UK and Canada-based engineering teams — not re-routed call centres. Support tiers include standard business-hours assistance and premium 24/7 options for mission-critical deployments. All support is delivered by the same engineers who build the software, ensuring fast resolution of technical issues. Partners also have access to a dedicated partner portal with documentation, firmware updates, and configuration tools.

What is the difference between Wavestore VMS (WaveView) and WaveFusion?

Wavestore VMS — also known as WaveView — is our proven, on-premise video management software for recording, viewing, and investigating video. WaveFusion is our next-generation unified security platform that brings access control, identity management, and video together into a single cloud-native interface. WaveFusion is built on the same engineering principles as WaveView, and is designed for organisations that want to unify their entire physical security operation. Both products are available independently — WaveFusion does not replace WaveView.
